Which paper size should I use?

Most of the world uses the ISO A series, and A4 is the standard for letters and documents. The United States and Canada use Letter. If you are not sure, read A4 vs Letter or how ISO paper sizes work.

For envelopes, the C series and the long DL envelope match the A sizes. For ID and bank cards, see ID-1, the credit card size.

How the sizes relate

ISO sizes all share one proportion (1 : √2), so scaling between A sizes is about 70.7% going down one size and about 141.4% going up one size. North American sizes do not share a proportion, so printing between them needs a different scale; the guide on scaling a document between paper sizes lists the exact percentages.
