How the numbers are calculated
Pixels are the physical size in inches multiplied by the resolution (PPI) and rounded to the nearest whole pixel. Points are pixels at 72 PPI, the unit used by PDF and PostScript. For example, A4 (210 × 297 mm) is 8.27 × 11.69 inches, which is 2480 × 3508 pixels at 300 PPI and 595 × 842 points.
Which resolution should I use?
- 72 PPI matches PDF points and many screen design tools.
- 96 PPI matches CSS pixels on the web.
- 150 PPI is acceptable for draft prints and large posters viewed from a distance.
- 300 PPI is the usual target for sharp print quality such as flyers, photos and documents.
Frequently asked questions
Why does A4 have different pixel sizes in different programs?
Because the pixel size depends on the PPI setting. Some programs use 72 PPI (595 × 842), others 96 PPI (794 × 1123) or 300 PPI (2480 × 3508). The paper itself is always 210 × 297 mm.
